Bernardo Buontalenti was a famous Florentine architect, inventor, theatrical set designer… he is also considered the inventor of modern gelato. When in the ‘70s, nearly 500 years later, Florence held a competition to honor the famed inventor local gelateria, Badiani submitted a cream based gelato that captured not only the top prize, but the heart of Florentines. Now this popular flavor can be found at every gelateria in Florence, but you’ll be hard pressed to find it elsewhere. The flavor is pure cream, slightly sweetened. Whereas Crema (Cream) gelato is thick, rich and golden with egg yolks, Buontalenti is the color of fresh cream, with slightly more delicate flavor. Today Badiani’s has trademarked the Buontalenti name, and it is still the best place to go to try the original version.
